Passing of Ed Haney

I am sorry to report the passing of former OTC & LDO LT Ed Haney. From what Ed & Pat Haney’s daughter Pam told me Ed was attending a Moose Lodge Convention in Orland, FL and that she had been contacted by the Orlando Police Department informing her that Ed was found by hotel staff non-responsive in his room this morning. Further, Pam told me that she had visited Ed approximately five weeks ago and that Ed complained of swelling in his legs. His doctor told him it might be caused by a blood clot and prescribed a medication.

Friends from his Moose Lodge told Pam that they had breakfast with him yesterday and he had told them he was not feeling well. He left to go to his room to take his medication and to rest advising them that the medicine he was taking put him to sleep for about seven hours. Thus when his Moose Lodge friends did not see Ed at lunch and at dinner they suspected that he had decided to rest for the remainder of the day. From that information it is impossible to tell cause of death or whether he died yesterday or in the early morning hours of today.

Pam and her husband Chuck are traveling to Orlando to receive Ed’s personal effects and to have his remains sent back to Hampton Roads for burial. Funeral arrangements are to be made upon Pam and Chuck‘s return home using Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, and the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery where Ed will be laid to rest beside his wife Pat. The family will advise me of the time and dates of Ed’s funeral arrangements as soon as they are made and I will pass them on to you in this forum.

To Pam and April’s family, Kara joins me in offering you our sincere condolences for your tragic loss. Ed was a good friend and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. If there is anything we can do to help your family do not hesitate to ask.

In deepest sympathy,
Denny & Kara

Re: Passing of Ed Haney

This is sad news indeed. I have known Ed and his wife Pat since 1971 when we were stationed together in Bermuda. Now they have both passed away. Pat passed away 1 Nov 2013. My thoughts and prayers are with the Haney family during this very difficult time. May their memories of happier times help ease their pain. - Ed Smock

Re: Passing of Ed Haney

So very sad indeed, just 5 or so months since Pat's passing. So sorry for April and Pam to have both pass so close to each other, however if you ever talk to a loving married couple with that many years together like Pat & Ed I believe they would have wanted it that way.

Re: Passing of Ed Haney

We are becoming older, and our beloved shipmates and spouses are becoming fewer. We should all take some comfort in the sense of closeness that our community continues to feel, but the loss of standouts like Ed is difficult and sad. My sincere condolences to Ed's family and loved ones.

Re: Passing of Ed Haney- message for Denny

Denny -

So very sad to hear of Ed's demise. Our family knew Ed and Pat well while we were on our second tour in Bermuda. Our daughter, Shelly, and April Haney spent lots of days playing around and in the cove near the Navy housing units. I can't recall, for sure, but I think Ed made LDO after we left BDA.

Linda and I send our condolences to Pam and April, but not sure if they will see the messages on this website, so - Denny, if you see them, please let them know that our family's thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time in their lives.

Also, if you have April's contact information, I would appreciate you emailing it to me so I can pass it to our daughter, Shelly, as I believe she would want to contact April.

Re: Passing of Ed Haney- message for Denny

Tragic and very sad news. RIP Ed Haney, and our heartfelt condolences to his family. Life is too short and too uncertain; to each of you on here, I loved my time with you and a day doesn't go by without my reflecting back on cherished memories. Ed didn't have the luxury of telling folks that for a last time but I'm sure he would have, given the chance. Man, life's fragile, isn't it?

Re: Passing of Ed Haney- message for Denny

I can't begin to describe the loss Pat and I feel at the passing of Ed. We first met in Puerto Rico in 1969 when Ed was on the ORI team. For some unexplained reason, we hit it off immediately and over the course of our careers, were stationed together on a number of occasions.

We just recently made plans to meet at the 60th. Ed told us in e-mail that he was having health problem but was optimistic that the most recent medication he was taking was helping him recover and that he would be in shape to attend the September Gala.

I guess I sound like a broken record when I continue to say that our friendships are fragile at this time in our lives. But, even though we somewhat expect these tragic events, they still hurt when they involve close friends.

Pat and I extend our deepest condolences to Pam, April and the remainder of Ed's extended family.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of another shipmate. Ed and I were stationed in Bermuda. He and Pat both enjoyed the island and were fun to be around. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
