I found this article well written, with some good points why "OUR NAVY" should not have completely abolished CPO initiation. In view of the fact that at least 20 CMC's and a like number of CO'S/XO'S have been relieved for cause over the last two years, CPO initiation tailored to enhance leadership skills may still have some usefulness. Its worth a look. Happy New Year to all.
Tony,
Happy New Year, your post brought back many emotions about the desire in me to make Chief. As a PO1 for 6-7 years I was truly ready to become a CPO. I looked forward to the change in uniforms, being called "Chief", and of course the added responsibilities that came with the title. I couldn't wait to be initiated. By the time the entire initiation process (from the BUPERS message notification to the reading of the Creed) was complete I can only say I was a changed Military person. The initiation put an explanation point on being a Chief. Trust, Honor, Pride, and Responsibility. Too bad the powers to be have made this decision. It may be something that needs to be reviewed again!

CPO USN Retired
I'm just glad I'm not on AD these days. I'm absolutely sure that I would never have made it past my first 4 year enlistment much lest retire as a LDO LT at 26 years.
I, like Chuck, was honored to have been initiated by my fellow Chief Petty Officers on Adak in Oct of 19701(I was E-5 for nearly 6 years), so I was interested in seeing what the article had to say. Unfortunately, when I clicked on the linked website, I could not view the article. I tried using both my normal browser (Windows Explorer?)and Google Chrome, but neither one allowed access to the website. Any known reason? Maybe it is something the webmaster (Russ Lownie) might be able to provide some insight to.
Thanks for reading my post and offering up the other website, which I have been able to access. As I am not feeling all that well just now, I am planing on "turning in" early, so I just skimmed the article.
I intend to read it more carefully tommorrow, and will most likely print a copy for future reference.
