Re: NOTICE: 67 members moved to IUSSCAA Inactive status

Jack -

I seldom review the Alumni members listing (even though it is on my desktop), so I guess I never gave much thought to the status of John Emory's status. Having read your post and looking at his status, I see his membership dues paid thru April of 2013. Nice of you to offer to pay his renewal.

I have known John since Jan of 1959 (we went thru Great Lakes boot together) and spent our first hitch at the exact same duty stations - from going thru the "Green Doors" to Coos Head 4 years later.

You are correct that John is not in very good shape at all. He has been in a nursing home in near Conroe TX for at least the past 4 years. A couple of mutual friends (Craig Barnhart and Bob Wisdom) were stationed with us at COSP back around 1978-80 timeframe and both of them visited John a few times during the past couple of years. Unfortunately, I have been unable to make the trip to see John. Last saw him and Edy at a Pac Beach reunion in 2007.

Jack - I will email you with info on how to contact Edy by phoneand email. I will email her or call her to let her know that you are trying to contact John.

Best.....Irv

Re: NOTICE: 67 members moved to IUSSCAA Inactive status

If anyone gets an update on john I would appreciate
Hearing about him.

Re: "Big Bird"

There are many of John's friends that have been concerned about him and unable to communicate due to lack of knowing where he is. We would all appreciate knowing. Ed Smock

Re: "Big Bird"

John Emory's home town was Malone, NY. I called the two nursing homes in that town. He is not at either.

John Emory ("Big Bird") update

For those who know John Emory, the following is intended to provide an update on his status:

Some of you are aware that John has been confined to a nursing home for the past several years. He is in the Conroe Healthcare Center in Conroe, TX where he is being cared for by the staff and his wife Edie Emory.

I am not 100% positive, but I believe John has an affliction known as Lewy Body dementia. This results in some symptoms similar to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases (muscular disorders, cognitive problems, etc.). At any rate, he is unable to stand, walk - or even sit up in bed easily or without help. While he sometimes is able to recognize various people and names/memories of his past working relationships, this ability is at best sporadic, and Edie is his usually his facilitator in this regard.

Edie has indicated that John can, with some help, quite often recall many of those he worked with over the years and would love to hear from anyone who would want to send well wishes his way, or just a note that might rekindle some memory of a relationship/experience you may have had with John.

Contact iformation for John has recently been provided to those maintaining the website/Alumni roster. However, Edie has indicated that she and John would welcome a posting of that information on this message forum so that various members will be able to contact John. Accordingly, here is the pertinent contact information:

John and Edie Emory
545 FM 1488 Rd., Apt 1209
Conroe, TX 77384
E-mail: ekikagal@gmail.com

NOTE: Edie has great difficulty reading (macular degeneration in her eysight), so it is best to use a larger font if/when using email. Also, it might be best to print if sending a letter/note/card by regular mail, as it will be easier for her to read and relay to John.

I have known John since January of 1959. We went thru boot camp, FSS Key West "green doors" and the next four years of Navy life together, and have remained close friends ever since. I hope this post/information will be helpful to those whom have also known John and might wish to express your encouragement to him and his wife Edie.

Best regards to all in the IUSS community.

Irv (Dee) DeMatties

Re: John Emory ("Big Bird") update

Ed and others -

The credit for raising the issue concerning John Emory squarely belongs to Jack Spencer. I was not aware that John's membeship status had expired until Jack posted that information and brought it to my attention. All I did was chime in and do a little legwork.

Glad to hear that John will be receiving some renewed support from the IUSS community.

BZ to you Jack. Enjoy your retirement - and good luck with your move to MO. Next time I plan to be in that neck of the woodd (probably to visit Fred Schwanz and Walt Jackson) - I will be sure to give you a jingle and maybe we will meet in person!

Irv
