Re: Kremlin launches "quietest submarine in the world"

Michael:

Good find; thanks for posting.

This is the Project 636.3 KILO discussed in my earlier postings.

This is an effort by the Russians to regain the share of the diesel sub market they have lost to France and Germany. Six sold so far to Viet Nam. The 636.3 still does not have a fuel-cell capability.

Suggest those who still have access look for imagery that can provide a diameter for the 636.3 propeller. If that value exceeds the 636, then it should be a lower rpm (than 250) system, perhaps the 170 rpm that would result from using the BELUGA reduction gear system ratio of about three-to-one.

The ratio of the diameters of the 636 and 636.3 props should be the inverse ratio of the max 636.3 rpm to the 636 if - as expected - the Russian designers did not want to increase blade-tip velocity with the resulting increase in cavitation.

Example: if the diameter of the 636.3 prop is ten percent greater than the 636 prop, then the max 636.3 shaft rpm should be about 10 percent lower than the 636 or roughly 220.

If the 636 and 636.3 props have the same diameter, then they should have the same max shaft rpm: 250.

With the 636.3 still using a mod of the PG-141 main motor, we have a current longevity for that system - first used in the JULIETT in 1963 - of 53 years.

Since the 636.3 is being offered for foreign sales, some interesting documentation on performance specs should be available.
