Rick, Regrettably, a Lot of What Comes to Our Fingertips from the Internet is a Crock
To summarize the link to a previous posting on this site, a retired former SSN CO claimed to have listened to a tape of the UQC (GERTRUDE) exchange between THRESHER and her escort ship, the USS SKYLARK, during which the CO THRESHER described flooding in the engine room and his intent to surface from test-depth under emergency conditions.
Unfortunately, the Congressional Record describes testimony about the loss of THRESHER during which it was stated SKYLARK did not have a record capability.
I can only conjecture that what the former CO thought - for more than 40 years - should have been reported by CO THRESHER became - in his mind - what was actually said.
Bottom line: even the most apparently authentic assessments should be independently verified or at least questioned.
