Bruce, do you think the difference between the actual and estimated collapse depths which you listed were a result of intentional built in safety margins?
Also one can assume the crew probably never had a chance to know what happened at the time of collapse ?

I agree with your assessment that survival significantly below estimated crush depth was the result of "robust" designs.

I also agree that none of the crews were aware of the actual collapse events, although, in the cases of THRESHER and the NOVEMBER, they knew what was coming. In the case of SCORPION, they were probably already dead or unconscious as a result of the battery explosions that occurred 21m and 50s before collapse.

The durations and forces involved in collapse events that occur at great depth are truly astounding and can only be derived from very low-frequency acoustic data.
