Open Source Discussion of the VIRGINIA Class SSN Test Depth: 1600-Feet
(Quote) The wall-thickness and diameter of Virginia’s cold-rolled, HY-120 steel inner pressure hull, with scrupulously designed hull-penetrations and conscientious seam-welds, allows submarine design engineers to impose a safe-diving test-depth of 1600 feet, according to the open literature. If a VIRGINIA Class SSN collapse depth exceeds test depth by the same factor as THRESHER (1300 vs 2400), the collapse depth of VIRGINIA Class units should be about 3000-feet (1335 psi).
