More Boring Baseball Stats: Greatest Year Pitching Ever: Only One More ZZZZ to Follow

Pud Galvin’s 1878 season with the Buffalo Bisons of the International (minor) League was historic; he dominated the league, winning an astounding 72 games, losing 25 and pitched at least 895 innings. He threw 17 shutouts, and went 10-5 against National League teams.

He pitched every inning of the team’s first 23 games and went the distance in 22 consecutive contests between September 2 and October 4. (Gavin then won 365 major leaque games over 15 seasons: 46 games in consecutive seasons and 20 or more in eight other seasons. His higher annual salary was $3,000) Source: http://sabr.org/bioproj/person/38c553ff- See link

Note: the last major leaguer to pitch 300 innings was Steve Carlton (304) in 1980.

The best Galvin story:

In another instance, the highly skilled Galvin seemed able to successfully pick off a runner at will. While jawing with Cap Anson in a game against Chicago in late August 1887, Galvin apparently asked Anson, “Do you want to see me catch a man?” Anson dared him to do it, so Galvin strutted to the pitcher’s box and walked Jimmy Ryan on purpose. After Ryan arrived at first base, Galvin picked him off almost immediately. Anson (the Chicago manager) was furious, while “Galvin almost split his side laughing” after his successful demonstration.15
