Both TIME and DISCOVER magazines are using what appears - at least to me - to be an insidious approach to gain subscribers.
They send out mailings in envelopes labeled "OFFICIAL BUSINESS, Penalty for Private Use."
The content of the DISCOVER letter is a single sheet formatted like a bill and titled: "Thank You. Your Prompt Attention is Appreciated." Then it says: "Make Check Payable to: GPP Global Publications Processing."
This apparent bill is for $59.85. In reality, they are fishings for subscribers. Recipients owe them nothing
This approach would appears aimed at those (senior citizens?) inattentive enough to just write out a check for what they mistake for a valid bill.
I would think "not nice" is an understatement. I'd be willing to say it is bordering on fraud and is probably illegal....If you get one, turn it over to the police and sign a complaint.
