"Fake New" Has Been Around Forever; Here's a Classic Example from the Viet Nam War Era
At a time when US casualties were extremely high, ABC ran a news story that headlined that half those being drafted came from only seven states; the inference being that members of Congress wth the most influence were shielding draft-aged men from their states.
I added up the total population from the seven most populous states. The answer was: 51 percent of the total US population lived in those states. In other words, the draft numbers were exacting what one would expect statistically.
I called up the ABC affiliate in DC to tell them their news item was dead wrong.
