Passing of OTCS Ariel S Matienzo, USN (Ret)

I regret to inform members that the 7 Feb 2019 edition of the Virginian-Pilot reported the burial of "Ariel S. Matienzo" at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, in Suffolk, VA. I believe this refers to OTCS Ariel S. Matienzo, Sr., USN (Ret), who served in SOSUS in the 1960s and 1970s. The officiating Funeral Service, P.G. Thomasson of Virginia Beach, reported at its website that "Matt" passed on 29 Jan at age 76 but provided none of the usual obituary details, not even the identity of survivors.

Re: Passing of OTCS Ariel S Matienzo, USN (Ret)

Stationed with Matienzo in the 68-70 timeframe on Ramey. Good guy and good family. He became a postman with a walking beat after his USN retirement. I saw him once after he began work with the USPS and I didn't recognize him as he had lost a "lot" of weight. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Our sincere condolences to the Matienzo family.

John and Pat Ellis

I am very sorry to hear of Matt's passing. We served together at Brawdy. He was a great guy. RIP Shipmate...We have the watch.
