My Wife is scheduled for Open Heart Surgery on June 27th.
We saw a KU Med Center Heart Surgeon 3 weeks ago, Dorothy’s Mitral Valve is leaking at 50%. The Surgeon has scheduled surgery for June 27th with a Pre-Op check in of June 26th. He said the surgery will take about 4 hours. He is going to fix the Mitral Valve first which will require Open Heart Surgery, then do Catheter ablation (radiofrequency [RF] ablation) is a technique that electrically burns/destroys some of the abnormal conduction pathways in the atria using radio waves to fix her AFIB Issues.
She will be in ICU for the first day, then 4-5 days in hospital. She will be restricted for driving and lifting items over 10 pounds for a while.
The Doctor stated her heart is in good shape and no blockage, so within 3 months she would be feeling better and stronger then she has felt for the last 4 years.
Re: Wife Scheduled for Open Heart Surgery June 27th
John Helzer:
Had RF ablation seven years ago to deal with recurrent A-Fib.
The operation was a great success; no A-Fib since; however, I
was not told of the serious discomfort (real pain) that put me
back in the emergency room that night; thought I was having
a heart attack.
Surgeon's response: "Oh yes, that's a common result." My
response: "It would have been nice if I had been told what to
expect!"
Pain was of only temporary duration: circa one day.
Re: Wife Scheduled for Open Heart Surgery June 27th
Wife's surgery started at 8 am this morning after 90 minute pre-op. The doctor orginally stated it would take 4-5 hours. the surgery when so well that it was completed 3 hours at 11 am. Surgery when extremely well, Dr repaired Mitral Valve and another valve that had a small leak so he repaired it, Also did a procedure to fix AFIB. She is in the Heart Center ICU for the next 24 - 48 hours, then to a regular room for 3 - 5 days.
