Re-up for NAVFAC Point Barrow at 71 North; Alas, I'm Sure It Wil Be Remoted

The linked site describes a two reactor nuclear power barge now being towed
around Northern Russia to the East Siberian Sea.

If the USN thinks this will be used to power Christmas lights in lovely downtown
Pevek, think instead about an SSBN service facility to support deployments to
the increasingly ice-free Arctic Basin.

If the USN wasn't concerned with being called a "Brown Water Navy," they should think about Lake
Superior: deep enough at 1250-feet. Think of the money they would save: no need for anything
other than a fathometer and an upward looking sonar. No need to carry torpedoes or counter-
measures. No need to be capable of depths greater than 400-feet.

Theoretically, an SSBN patrolling in the open ocean could be sunk without the US knowing it. The
only way to get an SSBN in Lake Superior would be to dump one or more 15MT warheads delivered by
ICBMs into the lake - and I think someone might notice that.
