What Would Have Been Important for the USN to Have Done to Support the Search for the ARA SAN JUAN

- On an emergency basis, contact a member state of the European Union - which funds the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) – to obtain copies of CTBTO detections of the ARA SAN JUAN implosion by CTBTO stations at Ascension Island and the Crozet Islands.

- Process those recorded data - and data available from any US acoustic detection systems - to provide the one millisecond (0.001s) time resolution needed to measure the delay between detection of the direct acoustic path implosion signal and detection of “backscattered” paths of that signal reflected by bathymetric features in the immediate vicinity of the implosion.

- Use those measurements and the detectability of those signals from the sensors that made those detections as a function of bearing to construct bathymetric profiles of the seafloor above which the SAN JUAN imploded in sufficient detail to confirm the general and possibly unique characteristics of the wreck-site by comparison with available bathymetric charts.

- Had this been done, the search effort could have been more accurately directed and the SAN JUAN wreck more expeditiously located: possibly in several weeks rather than many months.
