HI, ET1 at COSL 1974 to 1977

Hello all....I had no idea that there was an IUSSC message board out in internet land. Last year I met 2 sailors heading home from Hawaii. Once the conversation got started I realized we had much in common. They were Sonarmen IIRC. They were sub sailors, I had been as well, that being a whole other story. I worked at COSL for a bit over 3 years (out of 12.5 active, then left the Navy. There are only a few names that I remember, Pete Howton (great guy now deceased) and Lt. Williams.
I left the Navy, but stayed in the Reserves to get the retirement and benefits. I ended up with Parkinson's Disease and 100% disability. I guess I have had an interesting time while serving, or so my civilian friends tell me. It certainly wasn't boring. My first ship was a fast attack, SSN590, as a Reactor Operator and my last duty station was COSL, and in the middle was a brown water ship, LST821 in country Vietnam. Anybody out there remember me?

Regret to say that I do not but you sound like a guy that I would have like to have met.
Truly sorry for your long term illness. Sounds like you are trying to make the best of it which is
what a strong sailor would do. My best to you and here's hoping some of your friends come out of the woodwork.

Re: HI, ET1 at COSL 1974 to 1977

If I can't find the old friends I will have to try making new ones. I do have some good stories about COSL.

If I had to choose from the Agent Orange Presumptive list, I would take the Parkinson's. The money is being well spent on college expenses for 7 grandkids, oops, make that 8 after 14 year gap. I hope to see some of them go into military service and this is part of it. They need to learn some of the lessons I learned. I certainly had more fun than if I had stayed in East Texas all those years. Our daughter can even claim to be Cuban, having been born in GTMO 47 years ago.

Re: HI, ET1 at COSL 1974 to 1977

Remember you well. Weren't we in "B" school TI at the same time. I converted to OT in'71. Made OTC while we were at COSL and was Maintenance Chief from May '75 until I transferred in '76. OT1 Renne passed away a few years back. Lost track of everyone else from maintenance who was there at that time. I retired May '86 out of Pearl. Sorry to hear of your medical issues.

Re: HI, ET1 at COSL 1974 to 1977

IIRC, we played pinochle during lunch a few times? And there was a burn bag incident? If that was you, you had a set for being a new chief....

Re: HI, ET1 at COSL 1974 to 1977

Rick was known for having a set......

Re: HI, ET1 at COSL 1974 to 1977

I sent Rick an email with some COSL stories, not sure how far I should go without changing some names to protect the innocent....
if there are any.

Re: HI, ET1 at COSL 1974 to 1977

The totally innocent are few and far between:joy:

Re: HI, ET1 at COSL 1974 to 1977

OK, a few days snooping and some names have been remembered. Just listing last names for the time frame in OP.......
Renne, Bolin, Kloc, Ballew, German, Williford?, Tarnow, Howton, and Williams.

It's a start for me, considering my advanced years. Can anyone add some names of maintenance guys that might be familiar to me? BTW, I mentioned the PD which is frustrating enough to be 80% of my 100% disability rating, but something else that sucks is the double vision. No way of knowing where that came from, altho old age and the PD meds are suspect. And I see things that aren't there sometimes, mostly people. They never talk, tho. And my wife only lets me drive short distances. See what you younger old guys have to look forward to? On the plus side, people don't expect much of me anymore. Takes a lot of pressure off.

Re: HI, ET1 at COSL 1974 to 1977

Wayne Renee, Ross "Buddha" Tarnow, Stan Kloc, Terry Babcock, Jack Spencer, and Ed Haney
are about all the maintenance types that I can recall from that time frame.

I remember a guy, drove a Pinto, wanted to do a brake job on it. I offered some special tools, he declined in favor of his own tools, pliers and a screwdriver. Ended up with stitches in his lower lip. Another guy (computer tech) had a Duster 340 with dual 4BBL carbs. I think he married a gal there who played rugby (great legs), right under the nose of his chief who had eyes for her. Add the Lead OT1 who was Alaskan and Ham radio enthusiast. And a WAVE who rolled my can of soda down the stairs. Never asked her to bring me a soda again, even if she is going to the machine anyway. Then there was the guy we got for a short time since his ship was going to the Med for longer than he had left....right in front of me he answered a question from Lt, Brown, (just remembered him) that I was sure would lead to a Captain's Mast. I can't quote it here, but it was something about goats and a nickel a herd.. Mr. Brown was cool about it.
I can think of some guys who had reason to dislike me, but their names don't show up on the members list.
I had a rule....the Navy may have treated me badly at times, but as long as I am in it, it is MY Navy....
and you can't mess with it.
Break time.....
