There is a call to change the names of the remaining facilities from NOPFs to...something else "catchy"...to explain our mission better. I thought I would float this here for fun and conversation.
From an email today:
Khaki,
I’d like you to brainstorm a new name for our command. This is an attempt (by OPNAV, CSP, CUS) to properly reflect what we actually do – from an operational perspective. It will help avoid Fleet confusion over what IUSS and NOPFs actually do, and it will help our Sailors advance through their careers.
Feel free to shoot me a note back with your idea(s) and any reasoning behind your idea(s). I owe a recommendation back to the CDRE this Thursday.
Thanks

That makes sense. I don't know if CUS is going to change their name, but undersea surveillance...? Yes, Ocean Surveillance makes more sense as it's air, surface, and subsurface and the average Joe might not necessarily equate air with undersea.
I'd hate to hear people say "osif" (OSF)...doesn't really roll off the tongue.
How about Pacific Ocean Surveillance Center...or just POS? nah...I don't think that would fly...
