If you recall, there was a lot of discussion regarding Hearing Aids back a few years go and I was talking about a Retired Military Program in which one could get some pretty sophisticated devices for a very reasonable price. If you recall, I took part in that and got Hearing Aids.
Well, my hearing has deteriorated so badly in one ear and is not much better in the other to the point that the hearing aids aren't getting it done.
So, my ENT Doc is recommending "Cochlear Implants" as a solution to my problem. I have done some reading and the technology has progressed to where one doesn't look like a robot when they are wearing it and in my opinion, the current hardware that is exposed is no more that the hearing aids behind the ear.
The whole deal cost about $10k. Medicare has approved coverage as well as TRI Care for life. My ENT says the "Most" I "might" pay is $190. Financially, this appears to be better than me chasing a solution through hearing aids. But..., I don't know enough at this point to pull the trigger.
So, I'm asking. Anyone out there wearing this technology and if so, would you share your opinions.
John, I'm not familiar with that particular technology but I hope it works out for you. I am still using my devices I got through the RACHAP program 5 years ago, but may look into replacements soon. For David...how do you get replacements through the VA?
John, A friend of mine just got updated cochlear implants. He is really stoked about how much better the new ones are. I believe he hears better than I do using hearing aids. Here is his email address so you get unfiltered info instead of what I thought he said. Dick Lane, r.lane95@yahoo.com
Thanks again for your reference to Dick Lane. He couldn't have been more helpful. He wrote an extensive piece on his situation that led to Cochlear considerations and a great description of his experiences after the implant. Its great to have the input of someone with no agenda.
Thanks again Buddy, I appreciate your taking the time to help.
