Today marks the 54th anniversary of the death of a NAVFAC watchstander in the line of duty. STG3 Robert "Bob" Koutelis died on the daywatch at NAVFAC Guam while attempting to save the lives of 2 USAF personnel who were trying to "surf" the large breakers on Ritidian Point beach. Bob was the lead man on the lifeline that the Navfac Beach Guard deployed. He was a Navy Certified Surf Lifesaver. A hole in the reef claimed his life befoe others on the line could pull him back.
