Spammers come by some nights and drop their spam posts on the board. When I get up in the morning, I see them and I delete them.
We have an open board, meaning that anybody can post on it.
If we want to close the board, so only members can post, then everybody will have to have (yet another) user name and password to keep track of. I have been trying to avoid that.
Another option is to add a captcha so that every time you post, you have to prove that you are a human. I have also been trying to avoid that.
The spam is not new. Rick Matthews had to deal with it when he was webmaster. I deal with it now.
