25th Birthday present from Diana

Heir to the throne Prince William is one year older today - and several million pounds richer thanks to a birthday present from his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.

From today the prince can access his inheritance from Diana's estate, pushing his bank balance up by a whopping £6.5m.

Her £21m-worth of belongings were split between her two sons when she died 10 years ago but the young princes have been too young to have access.

Diana's estate was made up of stocks and shares, jewellery, her multi-million pound divorce settlement, dresses and personal items from Kensington Palace.

After paying out a hefty £8m in inheritance tax Prince William is now able to access the income generated by the investment of his share, believed to be around £250,000 to £300,000 a year.

The cash would be a significant top-up to the £22,000 he currently earns as a Cornet in the Blues and Royals, but sources have said he will not touch the money yet.

The Prince has his accommodation, staff and polo playing paid for by the Duchy Of Cornwall.

He is also believed to have access to funds left in trust for him by his great grandmother the Queen Mother.

When the Princes reach the age of 30 they will be able to request their share of the capital in full.

William is to spend his 25th birthday undertaking his normal training duties with the Army at Lulworth in Dorset.
