Train stations and paedophiles

11 year-old Magda's horse-riding instructor was supposed to take her home, but she dropped her off a few hundred metres short.

Train stations are dangerous places in Poland, for children especially. If not for W-wa Centralna, which they have to cross, my kids wouldn't need escorting to the Palace of Culture.

Re: Train stations and paedophiles

I still believe that Poland is a probably a safer place to bring up a child than anywhere in 'the west'.

Re: Train stations and paedophiles

Warsaw Central rail station is a lot safer than it used to be. The paedophile thing was about an organised group looking (including a German businessman and a Polish priest) for homeless runaways. Because of the publicity, it's really heavily policed now, especially at night: in fact, it's probably one of the safest places in Centrum.

Unfortunately not all people report crime to the authorities, especially when it comes from people in authority. Time will probably reveal that child abuse is more common that people have us believe.
Don't forget violence, thefts and assaults in Poland? once again not is all reported.

Re: Train stations and paedophiles

Perhaps child abuse is simply less prevalent in Poland. It is something known to run in families passed generation to generation (those abused often become abusers if the chain is not broken). For example in the recent case of Chris Langham he claimed his interest in child porn stemmed from a childhood where he was sexually abused.

I'm sure it happens in Poland as it does everywhere, but I don't think it is as widespread as in the UK for example. The influence of the church will be partly responsible. Also people know too much about each other's business in Poland and families are more close knit for something like abuse within families being kept quiet. Kids are also far more outspoken in Poland. The "seen and not heard mentality" does not apply and kids are encouraged to be confident and chatty with adults from an early age. There is (or has been) less emphasis on sex in Poland too. Yet sex is not considered dirty. It's a very different culture.

I'm not sure it's less prevalent (or more), simply that it's a subject people don't like to discuss. It gets picked up by the tabloid newspapers (SuperExpress, Fakt) but ignored by the serious ones.

Perhaps the rural basis to Polish society combined with the tradition of strong families helps to keep it under wraps.

Not a subject that would stay under wraps by any means given the sort of bitter disputes Polish families get into. The sort of muck that gets thrown around when Poles fall out with each other would lead to anything like this coming out sooner rather than later.

Re: Train stations and paedophiles

I've heard (and overheard) family rows where it has been yelled about viciously, albeit in a roundabout way. I think there's a tradition though of avoiding state involvement at all costs. Even though there are plenty of childrens' homes here, and they are often sadly full.

Super Express occasionally has some harrowing stories about it too.

This sounds about right.
