Poland's PM accuses rival party of being too dependent on Germany

Poland's PM accuses rival party of being too dependent on Germany

WARSAW, Poland: The prime minister accused the rival Civic Platform party of excessive dependence on Germany, warning in comments published Sunday that the pro-business party would soften Poland's stance toward Berlin if it wins upcoming elections.

Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who heads the conservative and nationalist Law and Justice party, said victory for the pro-business Civic Platform party would mean a "reversal from our tough policies, particularly that of building a partnership-like relationship with Berlin."

Civic Platform "is too dependent on Germans," Kaczynski said in an interview with Wprost magazine.

Kaczynski's party announced earlier this month that it was seeking early elections two years ahead of schedule, possibly on Oct. 12, to end political turmoil.

Warsaw's relationship with neighboring Germany is still overshadowed by bitter memories lingering from World War II, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland and subjected it to a brutal occupation that killed 6 million citizens. Although political and economic ties between the two EU countries are overall good, historical issues surface frequently causing irritation.

Kaczynski also said Civic Platform is too close to the European People's Party, a center-right party active within European Union structures.

This, he said, "today unfortunately means an acceptance of German dominance. And all dominance is extremely harmful for Poland and for Europe."

Re: Poland's PM accuses rival party of being too dependent on Germany

Do full time European residents/citizens consider themselves ‘European’ or German, British, etc?

Re: Poland's PM accuses rival party of being too dependent on Germany

Hard to say, maybe European, maybe British Diaspora, though Polish friends, especially older people, sometimes describe me as being 'sort of Polish' or 'from England, but Polish really' They mean it in a nice way, and I take it as a compliment.

Re: Poland's PM accuses rival party of being too dependent on Germany

I was really flattered when somebody said the above at the weekend - these were people who are Polish born but have lived a lot abroad.

Re: Poland's PM accuses rival party of being too dependent on Germany

Anything that can get these scuzzbags out is worth doing.

But be careful, prior to the last election, the cut-off registration date for non-Polish EU nationals was (illegally) earlier than the date for Polish citizens.

With all the stuff about secret tapes and files and hidden pacts, it should be a stormy time ahead!
