Re: Prices

"Simon - Is there a possible business in organizing coach trips to shop in Germany the way Germans used to come to Poland??? "

I'm not sure about coach trips, but there are a number of people who have nice little businesses buying stock from shops in Germany and selling them here. A couple of them sell their wares on the streets of Gorzów - chocolate, sweets, biscuits, washing powder, washing-up liquid, etc. Most days there's a stall set-up under that strange grafiti-covered covered area between Empik and Rossmann/the Post Office.

Clothing is, as you say, generally of a ridiculously high price and low quality in Poland.

We get a fair bit of our shopping in Frankfurt.

You better check the labels most of the things that we have are made in China. It's hard to find items made in the USA. This past Christmas a lot of the Christmas bulbs were labeled made in Poland almost all shoes are made in China.

Re: Prices

Phelps

You have to watch a lot of items coming in to the USA are contiminated with lead especially childrens toys. Also shoes have been contiminated with who knows what they cause blisters on your feet. And the latest toothpaste is also contiminated. Even the hardwood flooring the finish is contiminated with lead. They just have low standards in China that don't meet USA standards all they want to do is make money and pay the workers nothing. All items made in the USA that have been checked are ok

Re: Prices

Unfortunately it's difficult not to buy Chinese products now. Most retailers just see the extra profit to be made.

Re: Prices

"All items made in the USA that have been checked are ok"

Like the beef?

Thank you very much for the warning.

I'm sure the Chinese-made products that are exported to Poland meet stringent quality control standards...

USAPROUD - Do you live (or have you ever lived in Poland for a significant period of time) in Poland?

Re: Prices

Phelps

My wife and her family have all lived in Poland and most are still there. Even in the USA bad things happen like the beef but most of the time we have a handle on it. Our standards are stringent too.

Re: Prices

>I'm sure the Chinese-made products that are exported to Poland meet stringent quality control standards...

err ... um .... what would make you sure about that, now ...

Re: Prices

"USAPROUD - Do you live (or have you ever lived in Poland for a significant period of time) in Poland?"

"My wife and her family have all lived in Poland and most are still there."

Are you a politcian? This was a yes/no question. It seems the answer is no. You have never lived in Poland for a significant period of time, have you?

Again thank you for the warning. I can read a newspaper and was quite aware of the issue you raised. Your warning had little to do with the original post which was centered on the observation that all types of products from multinational firms (regardless of the country of production) seem to be less expensive outside of Poland.

If you lived here and had to shop on a daily basis, you might see the junk being peddled in shops and markets, and then you might appreciate what some of the forum members have commented on - why should such crappy stuff be so expensive when higher quality items are available and are in reality cheaper in other countries?

But again thank you for your warning.

Re: Prices

Ketchup !

15 years ago Hienz Ketchup was about 8x more expensive than Polish products, now it is about the same price, dispite shipping and import taxes.
Why?

Tescos in Poland sell Tescos own products many of them are inedible, they are produced in Poland. In the UK Tescos own products are often well known brands simply labeled as Tescos. Both products cost the same price.
Try Tescos biscuits in Poland
Why?

Labour costs are lower, tranport costs are lower, why are products more expensive.

GREED?

Re: Prices

Its what the people voted for, a free economy (captialism) you don't want to go back to the communist times.. or do you?

Re: Prices

you'd have to do a cost analysis and have some decent financial and non financial information to work out why tesco in Poland is expensive.

Re: Prices

and without a shred of hard evidence to back me up, I'd say "not enough competition" ...

the town my parents live in in Ireland has a large ASDA and Tescos within 5 minutes walking distance of each other. In Vancouver we had a Safeways on one side of a junction, SaveOnFoods on the other. If you didn't like prices or customer care you went elsewhere and it didn't mean a major life change to make it as far as the rival chain.

Re: Prices

They probably benchmark their prices against local suppliers to undercut them. If the local prices are high anyway then then won't undercut as much as in the UK. We have more intensive farming here etc and that lowers down meat, fish and fruit/veg costs. I'd assume that things like bread will be dearer with less intensive farming of wheat etc. Plus their import markets aren't as developed as the UKs. There will be many reasons but generally it should be the same across the entire economy and not just one store. Perhaps they are trying to recoup some start up fixed costs and investments through prices. Who knows..

Re: Prices

I was looking at the till receipts from our recent trip to Poland and think that compared to England the basic foods are all much cheaper in Poland. More luxury goods are a similar price.

US prices are generally very low compared to many countries, expecially European ones. Isn't petrol just $3 a gallon there?

Re: Prices

Dajwid said 'Tescos in Poland sell Tescos own products many of them are inedible, they are produced in Poland'.

I could be wrong but I think Tesco don't produce the goods themselves. They are made by local companies and packaged as Tescos.

We only tried one Tesco Poland product on our last visit and I must admit that was very good. Tesco herbal shampoo. Very reasonable price and good quality.

Do they have the Value brand in Poland?
