East-West motorway disaster

Never mind the fact that the A2 Berlin-Warsaw motorway is a project of monumental national importance, the govt is determined to carry on the hallowed tradition of cocking up transport policy.

Trucks work on a vignette system - basically they buy stickers enabling them to drive on motorways without stopping at toll booths. It's an efficient system which massively reduces hold-ups. So the govt is set to abolish it in an amendment, but is not quite sure yet whether it will do so.

Meanwhile the A2 private motorway constructor/operators - who should have been paid directly by the govt for their work not under an expensive public-private partnership - have to present their financing plan to govt without knowing the basis on which to proceed. Never mind - the taxpayer will fully cover any potential loss incurred.

The end result is that the motorway will be delivered for use late and at greater cost, and the private partner bears no business risk at any stage.

You couldn't make it up. Apparently, UK Prime Minister Moron Brown is also interested in finding new ways in which to fritter away money pointlessly.
