Privatization plan for Poland

Government adopts bold privatization plan
Warsaw, Poland April 23, 2008
The Government adopted a four-year privatization plan on Tuesday. Under the plan, 740 state-owned companies are to be sold and PLN 30 bln in revenues collected by the Treasury.

The Treasury will sell stakes in Poland’s second largest bank PKO BP, four consolidated power groups and companies in the chemical sector.

According to Treasury Minister Aleksander Grad’s plan, power companies ENEA and PGE will first increase capital though IPOs on the Warsaw Stock Exchange and later the Government will find strategic investors for them.

Grad said, however, his plan does not foresee further sales of stakes in oil companies PKN Orlen and Lotos or copper giant KGHM.

It is hoped that this will not be a fire sale assisting the mafia and political contacts buy at bargain basement.
Once these companies are privatised it will be a question of holding your breath and awaiting sharp price increases. The money from the sale can pay for the war in Iraq and increase the pay packets of the politicians

Re: Privatization plan for Poland

That's been the experience with "privatization" in the UK. The best one was when Blair privatized the weapons research centre - and the people who massively understated its value became millionnaire shareholders!

Re: Privatization plan for Poland

This can only be a good thing. I believe many state owned companies and institutions need some shaking up. Far too many people employed doing very little.

Re: Privatization plan for Poland

I don't think that is true, people in Poland earn very little and are exploited by there employers, lake of occupational health and safety, meal breaks etc. Once these companies are privatised it will mean people being stood down and prices going up.
For the lucky owner it will be a take over by a larger western company.
Poles are no lazier than the Brits or yanks or I might say the aussies

Re: Privatization plan for Poland

maybe we can have a thread on how to become a shareholder in Poland?
