US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money

New York Times
Published: June 30, 2008

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Time to shop until you drop across the Atlantic, the U.S. embassy says. In an unusual appeal, the United States is enticing Poles to visit and spend money this summer in hopes of propping up its faltering economy. The campaign comes as the Polish currency hit a historic high -- reaching 2.1194 zloty to the dollar on Monday.

''When you visit the States, bring an extra suitcase so you can return to Poland with a suitcase full of new items,'' U.S. Ambassador to Poland, Victor Ashe, is quoted as saying on the embassy's Web site.

The invitation is a sea change in bilateral relations. For most of the 20th century, impoverished Poles traveled to the United States in search of any possible job. Now they are being seen as a source of increased revenue.

The idea was a Warsaw initiative, said embassy spokesman Chris Snipes. He was not sure whether similar promotions had been undertaken by other U.S. embassies around the world.

While inviting Polish tourists, the embassy makes no mention of easing U.S. visa requirements for Poles. Warsaw, a staunch U.S. ally, has been demanding for years that the visa requirement be ended, along with the US$100 fee for the lengthy procedure.

The embassy did note that the average waiting time for a visa was down to two days.

''The zloty is particularly strong and it's a good time to travel to the States,'' Snipes said.

Poles with $ to spend are buying property in the US. Funny, it used to be Americans (of Polish descent or with some ties to PL) who bought property in Poland throughout the 90's...

Better do it before the Fed starts raising rates and dollar goes up again

"Better do it before the Fed starts raising rates and dollar goes up again "?

Do you think this is going to happen soon?

It's been low now for a long, long time

Re: US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money

But I must admit, US draws a different class of Poles.

I was in the Bahamas for a weekend few weeks ago and met a whole Polish tour who were dropping ridiculous $ at the Casino. All younger guys with their wives, most were in farm equipment business.

There's more and more of them lately, quite a few have bought condos in S Florida ever since Kulczyk moved down there.

Def not what you will find in London.

I wish I knew exactly when - now that info would be worth a lot of money

All signs point to mid-next year.

It also depends on who wins the elections...Obama win would spell a significant stock market drop, which would probably pro-long lower rates...

we shall see my friend

Re: US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money

one last thing on the rates - GW tax cuts (unfortunately) expire in 2 years. That almost guarantess stronger greenback since it will automatically reduce the deficit...

Poland feels a lot more like England or France on your pocket. In Warsaw, almost no difference as far as hotels and meals.

Good point.

Many local farmers around these parts now have new tractors and equipment bought with EU money.

Very true.

I read that a couple of our members are considering moving back to the UK because of the now high cost of living here.

Re: US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money

All hail European socialism!

They got their Marshall Plan aid 50 years later...

Does not surprise me...

We finished building are house in Poland right around the time dollar started heading South.

One of my partners is building a very similar place, on a same sized lot, only a few doors down, and his first estimate was nearly double of what we paid. Crazy. And it didnt take long at all.

PL has a great shot of becoming totally "European", hopefully this gov't wont f**k it up

Re: US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money

Building and building labor costs are now ridiculously high.

Where do you have a place? Warsaw? Krakow?

Re: US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money

Krakow. Mogilany area. I love spending Christams there.

You ever been?

Re: US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money

No. Only the city itself. I'll look at a map later.

Any photographs to post?

Re: US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money

The whole development has website, but to be honest, Im a little freaked out about posting it after all those discussions we had with the crazy militant types. Especially that one crazy London Arab. Am I too paranoid?

Re: US wants Poles to visit, spend lots of money

The number of people allowed to post have been cut right back since the Pakistani episode, but, you might be right. There might be a loon or two lurking. I'll do an internet search for the area later. If I can't find it I'll ask my wife to search using Polish.
