Russian ambassador gives ominous warning to Poland and Baltic states
Warsaw, Poland August 12, 2008
Russia’s Ambassador to Latvia, Alexander Vyeshniakov, said on Monday that Poland and the three Baltic republics “will pay for their criticism of the Kremlin regarding the conflict in Georgia.”

Vyeshniakov added, “in such serious matters, one cannot act hastily as it could lead to a big mistake” with consequences which last for a long while.

Over the weekend, Polish President Lech Kaczynski called Russia’s actions in Georgia “an act of aggression” and signed a joint declaration with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania condemning Russia’s military campaign in Georgia.

The Polish Government is attempting a slightly different approach from the President. On Monday, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told the daily Dziennik, “We still want normal relations with the Russian Federation and, acting within the European context, we are demonstrating that we are a serious and predictable partner.”
