“Why on earth would Poland support Georgia except to spite the Russians?”
The guiding British principle of continental politics has been to ally itself with the lesser continental power. This has shifted over the years: alliance with the German states against Napoleon; alliance with the Troisième République against the Kaiser. The concept is simple: the leading power does not need you and, unchecked, will continue to grow until it consumes you.
The guiding principle of Polish continental politics is the same; except that in the Polish context the greater power and threat is always Russia.
