Polish hero dies

Marek Edelman, Warsaw Ghetto Hero Dies

Marek Edelman, the last surviving leader of the Warsaw Jewish Ghetto Uprising against the Nazis, died last Friday in Warsaw at age 87.

During the Nazi German occupation of Poland, Edelman was among the founders of the underground Jewish Combat Organization and one of the three commanders of the uprising in the Jewish Ghetto in 1943.

After the war, Edelman moved to Łódź , central Poland. He was a prominent cardiologist who later became a dissident during Poland's communist regime, writer and political activist,

He received honorary degrees from Yale University and the Universite Libre in Brussels and is an honorary citizen of the city of Łódź.

In addition to the Poland's highest honor, the Order of the White Eagle, he received the French Legion of Honor from President Sarkozy.
