Polish universities fail out of Top 200

NATIONAL

08.10.2009 14:43
Not a single Polish university has qualified to the Top 200 World Universities ranking, conducted by the Times Higher Education magazine.

According to the rating, the world’s top universities are: Harvard University, University of Cambridge, Yale University, University College London, Imperial College London and University of Oxford. This year there are 39 European, 36 American and 16 Asian universities in the Top 100 World Universities. In comparison with the last year, the number of US universities in the Top 100 has gone down by six and the number of European universities has increased by three.

In the Top 50 World Universities there are only six universities from the European Union (except UK), mainly engineering and IT universities from Switzerland and France such as ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology), Ecole Polytechnique (Paris), Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland).

The rating was based on peer and employer review scores, faculty per students and citations per staff scores and international staff and students scores.

University rankings, which are commonplace in the US and Great Britain as well as in Scandinavian countries, have recently gained popularity in Poland and other new EU member states. Therefore, the European Commission decided to create a multi-dimensional university ranking system. The pilot project is expected in the first half of 2011.

In Poland, popular university rankings are published annually by the weekly Wprost magazine and the daily Rzeczpospolita. For years the two top positions have been held by Jagiellonian University in Krakow (the oldest university in Poland) and University of Warsaw (the biggest university in Poland). (mg/mmj)

I thought Polish universities were of higher standard???

Re: Polish universities fail out of Top 200

Offbeat, I saw this survey a few years back and noticed Polish universities were far down the list then. It is a subjective survey in many respects. It also comes down to money. Polish universities won't be as well funded as harvard or oxford. Therefore they won't have the funds to invest in fantastic facilities and equipment. I'd imagine that many decent lecturers may have left Poland because of poor wages & the ones left will be disgruntled (staff are surveyed). Also people have the benefit of comparison now. they may have been on exchange programmes and seen what is available abroad. I seem to remember that Poland also has a large number of foreign students.

In general I would say Polish graduates Ive met are of a very high quality.

It would be good to see a breakdown of the survey results into the different groupings : students, peers, staff etc.

ha, ha, ha, he, he, he

you have got to be having a laugh.

Re: Polish universities fail out of Top 200

No I was not having a laugh Boris....but I'm assuming that's the only part of my post you don't agree with. Or do you have an intelligent point to add yourself rather than just the "ha ha ha he he he"?

Re: Polish universities fail out of Top 200

Difficult to know why Polish universities have not rate a mention, I wonder what criteria is used etc.

Re: Polish universities fail out of Top 200

The only university I know of is Warsaw University - one of the top ones. One of the senior lecturers told me standards have plummeted as a direct result of the educational reforms she herself helped to implement!
The propaganda of success!!
