Bronislaw Komorowski wins Polish presidency, exit polls say

Bronislaw Komorowski is on course to become the new president of Poland after exit polls gave him a narrow victory in the country’s presidential elections.

As polling booths across Poland closed, Mr Komorowski, the candidate of the governing party, emerged as the favourite to win, with one exit poll giving him a six per-cent lead over Jaroslaw Kaczynski, his rival for the post, with 53 per cent of the vote although another poll gave him just 51 per cent.

Poles had turned out for the closely fought presidential run-off triggered by the death of president Lech Kaczynski in an April plane crash. Jaroslaw Kaczynski is the identical twin of the late president.
