Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

Here are four popular Polish church hymns:

Chrystus Pan, Boży Syn
Zbawca nasz zgodził się wziąć mój grzech,
za mnie umrzeć chciał,
ażebym znał mój ogrom win
i wiedział, że Krew Jego zbawia, oczyszcza i leczy.

Wywyższony bądź, Jezus, Baranku mój
Tyś Jedyny Odkupiciel, Tyś mój Król!
Wywyższony bądź, Boży Baranku!
Przed Twym tronem dziś najwyższy składam hołd.

=================================

Bóg się rodzi, moc truchleje
Pan niebiosów obnażony!
Ogień krzepnie, blask ciemnieje:
ma granice Nieskończony!
Wzgardzony - okryty chwałą,
śmiertelny - Król nad wiekami
A słowo Ciałem się stało
i mieszkało między nami.

Cóż masz niebo nad ziemiany?
Bóg porzucił szczęście twoje,
Wszedł między lud ukochany
dzieląc z nim trudy i znoje:
Niemało cierpiał, niemało,
żeśmy byli winni sami.
A słowo Ciałem się stało
i mieszkało między nami.

W nędznej szopie urodzony,
żłób Mu za kolebkę dano.
Cóż jest, czym był otoczony?
Bydło, pasterze i siano.
Ubodzy was to spotkało,
witać Go przed bogaczami.
A słowo Ciałem się stało
i mieszkało między nami.

Potem i króle widziani,
cisną się między prostotą,
Niosą dary Panu w dani: mirrę,
kadzidło i złoto.
Bóstwo to razem zmieszało
z wieśniaczymi ofiarami!
A słowo Ciałem się stało
i mieszkało między nami.

Podnieś rękę, Boże Dziecię,
błogosław ojczyznę miłą,
W dobrych radach, w dobrym bycie
wspieraj jej siłą swą siłą.
Dom nasz i majętność całą
i wszystkie wioski z miastami,
A słowo Ciałem się stało
i mieszkało między nami.

========================

Maryjo, śliczna Pani
Matko Boga i ludzi na ziemi,
Tyś świata Królową, Tyś gwiazdą na niebie,
Ty nas wiedziesz przed Jezusa wieczny tron.

Ref.: Maryja, Ave Maryja,
u Boga nam wybłagaj zdroje łask,
by świat lepszy był, by w miłości żył.
O Maryjo, miej w opiece dzieci swe.

Maryjo, śliczna Pani,
świat dziś czuje na swych ustach gorzkie łzy,
w sercu ból, smutek, żal, a w oczach wciąż strach.
Usłysz, Pani, błaganie, pomóż nam.

==========================

Wielbić Pana chcę
radosną śpiewać pieśń.
Wielbić Pana chcę,
On źródłem życia jest.

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

Many thanks, Magdalena, for your reply, and for including the lyrics, as well!

If anyone has any other favorite hymns they can add to the list, please post.

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

Hymn singing is not well-developed in Poland because hymn books are expensive - therefore churches don't waste their money on them.
Also, if they did buy hymn books, the congregation would simply steal them unless you posted security on the doors.
Hence the hymns actually played in church tend to be very bland and limited in number.

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

"Bogurodzica"
"Boże Coś Polskę"
"Czarna Madonna"
"Barka"

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

Many thanks, once again, to everyone who replied.

Does anyone know of any websites with "Midi" or mp3 versions of the above mentioned hymns?

I have a choral version of "Boze Cos Polske", but it is from a very poor recording and the lyrics are not clear. So any links to clear mp3 recordings, wav files or even midis of this and the other hymns are welcome, here.

Also, although it is not a Catholic hymn, I am looking for a midi/mp3 and lyrics for "Rota" ("The Oath) - the old anti-Prussian song. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

I forgot to report that last week it was hot so I went inside a church in Poland (not something I usually do anywhere) and saw an interesting sight. It was late morning and around 10 old women were sitting at the front of the church reciting prayers or hymns in unison. They all seemed well-practiced and knew all the lines they were reciting by heart. The whole thing was led not by a Priest but by one of the old women.

What were they doing? Is this usual?

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

There may be many reasons: June - a month for ritual prayers to the Heart of Jesus in catholic church.
Someone could have just died or it was the day of his/her funeral.

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

Or they simply prayed.

Hans, why do you put such an emphasis on the fact that you would't get there if it was not hot. Are ashamed to have anything to do with religion?

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

I went in there because it was hot amd I like the atmosphere in old churches. I have no belief in what goes on inside any church, temple, or mosque.

It wasn't any sort of service. It was very much unofficial. Maybe it was some sort of group praying session. What I found most interesting was that the person leading the whole thing was probably 75 and a woman. I'd have expected only a male priest to do this in a catholic church.

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

They were probably saying the rosary (or if it was 9am, 12 noon or 3pm, the Angelus.)
It might also have been a special devotion in which people visit a church on 9 sucessive days.

These are often led by women.

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

Thanks. It could have been just after 12.

How about the roadside shrines and crosses you see a lot of in Poland. Do people also pray at these on a regular basis?

Re: Traditional Catholic Hymns in Poland

During May, the women in many villages make a special devotion every evening. They sing and pray. (May is traditionally Mary's month). It reminds me a bit of 'well-dressing' in Derbyshire, UK.
