travelling to Szczyrk

Hello.
We are a family with 2 children travelling to Katowice airport and then onto Szczyrk next August.

Does anyone know what the road from Katowice to Szczyrk is like for service stations/food. Can we find dinner for the kids along this road, or should we wait till Szczyrk.

Any info on restaurants and eating in Szczyrk, and general infor on the town itself would be great.

Thanks
Varsovian

Re: travelling to Szczyrk

Szczyrk - it's not what I'd call a gastronomic centre. Pretty basic place, though the hills are nice enough. I've never been in summertime - I've always gone there for its poor quality skiing ("fast" road from Warsaw).
There will be a place to eat on the way, I'm sure, and the drive won't be too long either.

Re: travelling to Szczyrk

Hi. Thanks for that.

We are staying in Szczyrk for a few nights on our way thru Slovakia to Budapest.

Not expecting gastronomy, but need to feel confident from kids point of view that we can feed them ok!

What is the road like from Katowice to Szczyrk? How long do you think it will take?

Anyone been to Szczyrk in the summer?

By the way, how do I pronounce Szczyrk!!

What's in Szczyrk? Family?

I've never heard of the place and have no idea how to say it, sorry.

Re: travelling to Szczyrk

Mostly dual carriageway. Speed limit in most places 90km - you can go faster if you keep 150 metres behind a fast car ... that way he gets the speeding ticket and you get enough warning time. Apparently, the police aren't allowed to hide by the roadside anymore - but I haven't driven enough since the change to check this out yet.

Szczyrk is pronounced "Shh - chirk", more or less.
It has a few cheap restaurants where you can load up on pork. It's more or less a one-street town, with generally unattractive little houses lining the streets. Totally unlike Zakopane in this respect - this was a poor village adapted to provide basic holiday services for Silesian coalminers.

But, as I said, pretty hills.

Thanks for that.

Doesnt sound like you rate Szczyrk much!

How about Ustron then ? Says on the internet it is a spa town. Doesn't look far from Szczyrk.

Anyone ever been there?

A better place for winter sports is Zieleniec.
