Staple Removal

When you are removing staples from a wound such as a C-Section, do any of you put on that tincture stuff to make the steri strips adhere better?

How do I open those little tubes? do pour it right on the wound?

Dumb questions but I really can't remember and I know that there are some coming up.

Thanks

Re: Staple Removal

You crush the tubing and squeeze until a small amount apears on the filter area. You then rub down each side parallel to the outside of the suture/staple ad then place the steri strips over. Most steri strip (which are used to decrease the appearace of scars) are already sticky but the benzine tincture adds stickyness.

Re: Staple Removal

Thanks I was getting nervous. Does it hurt the pt.? and do I just drip it on the wound or rub? It has been a while since.

Re: Staple Removal

If you squeeze the tube and break the ampule inside, you can then squeeze some tincture down onto the cotton tip. You then can wipe a stroke on each side( or dab)and it will leave a strip of benzoin on each side that will help the steri strips adhere.

Re: Staple Removal

Sorry forgot the other part. You do not put it on or in the wound itself, but the would edges a few mm away from the open area. You need good skin to attach he strips to, not granulation tissue.

Re: Staple Removal

It does not hurt the patient, but you do need to ask them if they are allergic to sulfa, iodine, or shell fish because most of those tinctures (for sure if they are brown or orange in color) containe iodine.
