MA pay/work questions

I have worked at home as a medical transcriptionist for the past 6 years and I am now going to school to become an MA. I have 4 classes left and hope to have my externship done by Dec and graduate by Jan.

My question is this: What type of office is the best to work in (as far as pay). Also, does me having experience doing medical transcription raise my value? Will they see that and possibly start me out higher than most newbies?

I don't want to get too personal, but I feel that I need to explain my appearance of greediness. I would normally be ok with starting out at the regular start out pay (which I understand is usually around $10-$11), but I plan on making a huge life change after graduating and will need all the extra money I can get. Lets just say I plan on loosing 130 pounds of unwanted weight (hubby).

Any input would be greatly appreciated!! I am just trying to get an idea of what I want to do with this certificate. Is working in an office (specialty?) better or should I go try and work for an insurance company doing physicals or something (this is what one of my instructors used to do and said she made really good money). Or, do I want to work in a hospital even though its not always the best hours?

Re: MA pay/work questions

Hey Tina: I'm just starting school but....it sounds like you may have a good opportunity to supplement your MA income by doing some extra transcription work on the side....

Just a thought...

Re: MA pay/work questions

Tina-If you can get into one of those paramedical examiner companies (and there are many of them) then do it because you WILL make good money.
As for working in a hospital as an MA,I don't think many hospitals hire them, but it may be different where you live. Good luck with whatever you try.

Re: MA pay/work questions

Paramedical examiner!! Lol, that is what it's called!

I guess I'll just get through my externship and the last classes and then try to figure it out. I think finding a paramedical examiner job will be tough around this area but I have looked at all the hospitals and they seem to hire MAs. I just wonder what the pay is like. I do plan on keeping my MT job for as long as possible. It's a great way to make extra money and I only work it 2 hours a day anyway. I've left the company before and don't plan to again if I don't have to!

Thanks for the advice!!
