Hello all,
I got a job at a Cardiologists office I have not worked in the Medical Assistant field since late 06

I like the job but the pay (7:40 hr) is a tad low, especally for a specialist's office

Now Iám full time so that is good but in not to happy with the pay what should I do?

I live in Detroit Michigan the job is in the suburb of Bloomfield MI

Any Ideas

and hope everyone had a happy thanksgiving

Well... it's definitely a foot in the door, but I agree the pay is probably a little too low for a cardiology specialty office. I have a feeling the doctor has started you off so low to first assess your skills after such a long time, and teach and train you in what you need to know.

I would wait a couple weeks, feel out the office atmosphere, and see if you "click", then learn everything you can, and be very good at what you do. Be friendly, professional, reliable, and dependable in all areas. In the meantime, as you are proving yourself, and you get a chance, pull the office manager to the side, and ask for an evaluation on how you are doing so far. If you feel comfortable and feel you can tell her, just go ahead and tell her, that you are hoping you are doing well enough to ask for a raise.

Then, when you've learned a good deal about the office, how you are perceived, and appreciated, request a meeting with the doctor, and speak with him/her. Tell her that you really enjoy working at this office, and that you intend to stay for a long, long time, however, you'll need a little more pay to cover your expenses, and make a living as well. I bet the doctor will understand and be more than happy to grant it to you if you go about it the right way.

After all, it's supposed to be a win-win situation for everybody. You take care of the doctor and make him look good, and he'll take care of you.

I agree the pay is very low. But the flipside is the area(My parents live near there) you are in is one of the most economically depressed in the country.Even hospitals are laying off RNs and LPNs or have begun hiring freezes! I agree with Danni. Hang in there and let the office mgr and the MD assess your skills etc. In the event you don't think the office is a good fit for you, at least you are getting experience if you choose to move on!
