drawing an anesthetic agent

I understand that an MA can not inject an anesthetic; how about simply "drawing up" lidocaine for a physician to inject?

Re: drawing an anesthetic agent

Yes, they can do that. A classmate did that on her externship,at a bone doctor.

Re: drawing an anesthetic agent

Drawing up medications from a vial into a syringe is within the medical assistant's scope of practice.

Re: drawing an anesthetic agent

I actually did not know this. I draw up Lidocaine all the time for the Dr, but today I gave an antibiotic injection that had to be mixed with lidocaine instead of bacteriostatic saline...... did not know that was a no-no

Re: drawing an anesthetic agent

You must be referring to Rocephin. That's different than injecting lidocaine as an anesthetic for a derm procedure.

How about injectiong Solumedrol per an MD's Orders.
Can an MA actually do this. I have been told that they cannot not inject any Mehylprednisone products and Solumedrol is just that.

Re: drawing an anesthetic agent

I don't think an MA can inject a steroid. Even FNPs have to have special training to inject steroids,
