school is teaching MA students to insert IV's?

Hi,
I'm new here, but I always thought it was outside a medical assistants scope of practice to insert IV's. While I started pursuing my associate's degree in medicla assisting 5 months ago and I find out today from a student taking Phebotomy this term that we do learn to insert IV's? I always thought that was considered ivasive and we weren't allowed to do that. I live in Virginia; maybe this is a state that allows it? IDK

Are You Still In School? yes

Are You Working? no

two things to do:
1) check the your school/phleb. instructor
2) check with the dept of nursing or professional regulations that regulates phlebotomy.

Re: school is teaching MA students to insert IV's?

We learned to insert IV's as part of our phlebotomy course while I was in school. Our instructor told us that more and more hospitals that use MA's, are allowing us to do this.(in Michigan)
