Re: No wonder so many can't find a job

Disgusted
An ad I saw in the paper today, for a local hospital-

RNs-Home Health,Hospice,Med/Surg,Occupational Health

LPNs-full and part-time (must be IV certified)

Health Navigator-RN

Occupational Therapist

Pharmacist

MEDICAL ASSISTANT-must have prior Medical Assisting experience

Skilled Mechanic-Full Time

Why in the world out of all those positions does it state that only MAs have to have experience? What is going on that so many places will not hire you if you do not have "prior medical assistant experience",which is about 100% of any recent graduate? If I had known this was the norm, I would NOT have gone into MA school. It can't be denied that many places have it as some kind of policy that they will NOT hire an inexperienced MA unless they have CNA/STNA work in their background,or a very impressive resume. The rest of us are screwed.

Re: No wonder so many can't find a job

I know exactly what you mean. I graduated from my MA program this past July and have not found a job! I search everyday and send out my resume! Ads say CMA and at least 1 year experience. I am scheduled to take my CMA exam in December...hopefully I will get some bites.

We are hiring for field reviewers for our annual HEDIS study. Great opportunity to network because you will visit physician offices and good pay as an employee of our company. Take a look at our website for more information. www.outcomesinc.com

My dear children. The best and only way you are going to get your foot into the door is volunteer and get the necessary experience that you need. Trust me, that is what I had to do to get started in my career.

Re: No wonder so many can't find a job

It's not fair that everyone is either saying your not qualified or you need more schooling after we have given those schools our money and they are still pushing school and we're not getting hired. In order to keep your certification and not lose it, you're going to have to spend more money to keep your certification before it expires. To me this is insane. Going back to Administrative work. It's like your chasing work. I give up.

Re: No wonder so many can't find a job

It is so nice to know I am not the only one that is severely frustrated with not being able to find a MA job! I have been out of school for almost one year and I have yet to find a job.
And I am running into the same problem as most... no experience. I have actually asked some prospective employers how I am to have the experience if no one is willing to hire me!
If I would have known then, what I know now, I would never have gone to school, wasted my time, spent the money or taken on a grant that has to be paid!!

How condescending.

You may even be right. Your first sentence blows any chance you have of being taken seriously... so after that it reads bla, bla, bla.

Way to represent the nursing field.

Re: No wonder so many can't find a job

I dont know about everyones area but alot of places wont let you just walk in and volunteer.

Re: No wonder so many can't find a job

I'm in the same boat as you. I have been out of school for a year. I have applied at private offices, hospitals, dentist, and nursing homes (they wont hire because i dont have CNA). I have asked time and time again what I can do to land a job. People say temp services will help but where i am the temp services are not for the medical field. I hope i didn't go to school for no reason except to owe tones of money.

Re: No wonder so many can't find a job

Reading back on the all the responses to Medical Assistants not finding a position.

In this grueling world of seeking a position, in any field, you - yourself - have to make that first impression. If you resume looks sloppy or unprofessional, I will turn it down.

Your resume is your "TUX", "Suit and Tie", how ever you want to look at it. Its all reflecting you!

What have you done to gain experience? Have you volunteered your time? There are so many opportunities to gain exper. out there.... without getting hired to place on your resume. That makes you stand out from others becasue it shows you have a great work ethic! Willing to learn and work for things that might not start out at the top!

Volunteer such as : American Red Cross, Medical Corps reserve, CERT, WEAVER, AAMA, AMT, Community involvement, church, ect.......

Re: No wonder so many can't find a job

There are plenty of jobs available. I just got my national certification and didn't have any experience, but got a job in a private practice. The program I went through provided really good job placement assistance. I would suggest that anyone having trouble finding a job just find the right people to ask for help. If you want to go through my program sponsors there website is: www(dot)MedicalCareerSpecialists(dot)com

A note of caution from the Forum Admin:
The above is an non-approved posting of a website that we have not reviewed, nor sanctioned. We generally do not like to see website URLs posted without approval since we really do not know, nor have any control over who the poster is. It could be a student, recruiter, faculty of a school, or could be disguised link SPAM from the owner of the site, posing as a satisfied customer, or student. We just really don't know!!!!!

While we cannot prevent anyone from posting an unapproved link to a for profit website, we do frown upon it and monitor further behaviors. We are a respected forum and we have remained SPAM free for years - a rarely accomplished task only very few forums can pride themselves in. Anyone who SPAMs this forum, whether through obvious ads, or subliminal, disguised advertising will be banned.
