Welcome, Kevin! Another guy in medical assisting. Boy, I just love it, as my "old timers" here at the forum, those who have been with us for quite a while know that we have discussed "men in medical assisting" or actually "why so few men in medical assisting?" many times. I hope that the lack of men in this profession is coming to an upward trend, a career path traditionally dominated by women.

We know, and acknowledge that men make wonderful MA's and more men should be encouraged to take this path. We recently had a situation where a family practice posted an (unapproved) ad for a medical assisting position and they told us point blank, men will not be considered (in other words, their applications will be permanently "filed" you know where). While it is always a bit shocking, we all know that it is true that there are preconceived ideas and expectations of what a medical assistant should look and be like.

And Kudos on taking the medical assisting career as a spring board to go into nursing. We like to hear these success stories here.

Welcome Kevin.
I havent worked as a medical assistant yet but I start my last semester of school in about a week. I just took the nursing entrance exam today and passed. I plan to work as a medical assistant while in nursing school to get some actual experience working with people.
I also went to my externship interview this morning. It went well and Im very excited to start that as well. They informed me that I will not be able to draw blood (which Im good at and really wanted to do) but Ill be doing EKG's.

This site is great
Good luck!!

Are You Working? Not as a medical assistant yet

Re: New to this forum

Welcome Kevin! I'm in MA school right now, finishing the program November 30th and the formal graduation ceremony is Feb. 5, 2011. I also plan on going to nursing school. People keep telling me I wasted time and money by going to MA school first instead of going straight into nursing school. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that did it that way. I"m glad you are loving your job! Its always great to hear that stuff. Do you work for a family physician or a specialist? I'm hoping to work for a family doc but at this point, I think I will have to take anything I'm offered! Good Luck!!

Hey I feel ya Danni. I have worked for two companies and I have been the only male in the practice (besides the doctor). I have worked with center managers who gave me a hard time just because they felt like men shouldnt be in this profession. Everytime I tell other guys that I am a medical assistant, i get teased about it. But it is something I love to do and I wouldnt change.
