ANYONE WORK OR DO EXTERNSHIP IN PEDIATRICS help another problem ugh?

Once AGAIN I am having problems through my college! I wasnt taught properly and I do not feel prepared to go to an externship site. NOW I was told by my teacher earlier that everything was all set and I had to set up an interview for this obgyn office. I spoke with the lady in charge there and she is telling me its FULL already! I really had my heart set on OBGYN!Now they want me to go to a pediatric office in the same building, however it will be moving in a few months so I dont know if I even have a chance of getting hired!? Plus I think with a general doctor office you have to know alot more which I AM NOT PREPARED FOR. I just wish that I never went to this college...nothing but problems!I have not been shown at all or properly how to do some or all of the basic things such as blood pressure, pulse etc!I do not know what to do or what to expect any advice? I have too much stress and this doesnt help at all.

You definitely sound stressed! However, now is the time for you to be proactive....whenever you're not at your extern, READ READ READ!! Study and review!! Pay attention to what goes on at your externship site. Make lemonade out of the lemons your school gave you!!

Re: ANYONE WORK OR DO EXTERNSHIP IN PEDIATRICS help another problem ugh?

I tried to go into this semester positive, but day one there were already problems. Unfortunately, my schedule is way busier than I planned for this semester and its hard to review when I have alot of homework in my new classes. Also hard to review or try to learn hands on things now it seems a little too late for that. What would you say to the person interviewing you at the externship site if your school really didnt give you much opportunity to practice these basic things that Im assuming they think you should know by now? I do not want them to turn me away because I do not know how to do these things...also how do I communicate / defend my side letting them know its not my fault and that its the colleges? How should I prepare, wear ask etc? I have no clue really anything about pediatrics and have an interview this upcoming tuesday this switch is all so last minute notification for me. Thanks

Re: ANYONE WORK OR DO EXTERNSHIP IN PEDIATRICS help another problem ugh?

I noticed I need to edit that a hair...

We support 2 peds docs in our clinic, and the other providers see peds as needed.

Well child exams are as or more common than "my child is sick."

First thing you need to do is RELAX, take notes and be ready for change.

Grand parents are way better escorts for kids than first time parents, they have BTDT and have a much more relaxed disposition. IMO, first time parents need tranquilizers.

Ask what forms they use and for what ages, there are M-chat (18M and 24M), ADD/ADHD and depression screening (drug dependent). Hmg & Lead screening procedures and ages, think capillary tubes. That ought to get you started, my clinic guides are in parentheses others may be different.

What vitals to measure on what age groups.
H -height (all)
W -weight (all, nekid baby's always)
T -temp (all)
HC -head circumference (0-3Y)
P -pulse (all)
R -respiration's (all)
BP -blood pressure (3-18Y)

I take notes on everything the docs want!! Never make the doc ask for the same thing twice, take notes.

Good luck, have fun!!
