Rather than cutting a conversation short, I believe the art lies in staying to the point. A medical office is a very busy place, so make sure you look busy and remain in control of the conversation. It doesn't mean that there isn't room for a brief friendly chat, because that, too, can be very important for the relationship and reveal certain issues that the doctor MUST know. However, remain tactful and focused. If the patient does become a bit too long winded, a tactful maneuver is to wait for that little moment when they must take a breath and say, something that refocuses them on the actual task. You can interject by saying:"Thank you for sharing this with me. And now back to your list of medications that you are presently taking." Remember, a conversation is a two way street, but in a professional setting someone must remain in control to achieve the ultimate goal, which is the patient's well being and the doctor's schedule.

Danni, good points.

One thing I did forget. Sometimes my doctor likes to have me document what goes on. So, not only does the initial encounter take time, I get nailed twice documenting it.
