HIghest education for medical assist?

I know they have a year program and a two years program Right? But my friend told me that you can also get others certificate to have a better job opportunity on the medical field ,but like what ? I want to work with kids facing cancer . What else can I do so when I apply for a job my resume will look better?PLease give me a detail
