INFORMATION FOR FOREIGN MEDICAL GRADUATE

Hi,

I am a medical garduate (doctor) from a foreign country (Aga Khan University, KArachi), and am now living in Michigan. I am raising two kids and do not have the time to prepare for USMLE examination. Can you please let me know if I am allowed to work as a medical asisstant or do I need to get a licence for that and if so how? Thanks

Re: INFORMATION FOR FOREIGN MEDICAL GRADUATE

Masud,
there are no licensing requirements to become a medical assistant. There are thousands of medical assistants in this country that were hired and trained right on the job by the doctor who hired them.

So, in your case I'd imagine working as a medial assistant -- under the direct supervision of a licenced health care provider -- would be an option.

The fact that you should already know medical terminology and prescription names and be familiar with medical office procedures and communicating with patient and other medical staff seems to be a big plus.

What I am not so sure about is how doctors may actually feel about hiring what is a colleage (fellow doctor) into a so much lesser position. I'd imagine it could be quite intimidating on both sides.

Hmmmm... food for thought.
