wrong career field

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this website, just found it yesterdy and thought it would be very helpful and interesting. I'm currently a student in the medical assisting program, and began wondering if I'm in the wrong career field, because of my past. Five years ago, I was convicted of a DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol). And I've noticed on application at hospitals, or doctors offices, there is a field where it request any criminal convictions. Of course I have to write it down, because I don't lie. Will this keep me from obtaining a job as a medical assistant?

Any information will be helpful!

Rachel

Re: wrong career field

I doubt it. They are concerned about felonies, past convictions of abuse, things like that. Just be up front and honest about it.

Re: wrong career field

Many jobs, especially those working with vulnerable groups (children, vulnerable adults) require a criminal records check by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) as part of the recruitment process.

Having a past record of a DUI will not necessarily bar you from working as a medical assistant. This will depend on the circumstances and background of your offences.

When you apply have your answers ready too...

"I was young, I was naive. Over the past 5 years I have done (such and such) to better my life, I never took another drink.... I joined a church, I am a mother now, I am married now, I am a volunteer (whichever applies) and a very hard worker.

To prove myself I graduated top of the class and will sit for the CMA on such and such date. I am willing to start off at your front desk and work my way into the clinical back areas, all that can be explained."
