New student wondering about work area.

I'm going to start my AAS for Medical Assisting in Spring 2007 and I'm pretty excited. I was browsing this forum, which I found out about today, and I have a question. I noticed some of the MAs posting here say they've worked in OB/GYN and in pediatrics, too. I thought MAs only worked in a regular doctor/physician's office only. When you do your externships, do you have a choice in what kind of medical establishment you can do so?

Thanks :)

Re: New student wondering about work area.

I think it depends on the school, but MA's are hired in specialty offices also. I have worked in ENT/Opthamology, as well as cardiology.

Re: New student wondering about work area.

Yep, I did my externship in an OB/GYN office and got hired there. I love my job. It is always busy and I get to do lots of things, injections heart tones, help with procedures.. I also work in the lab and draw blood. We have a 1 chair drawing station. But that is lots of paperwork.
