What are specialties?

Hi everyone

I am a medical assistant student. I start my externship March 12- April 20. My question to everyone is what exactly are the specialities.
I want to go into a specialty, i wanted to do pediatrics but my teacher says that it is not a specialty. My other interest is OB/GYN, is that a specialty or is gynecology a specialty. I know i am interested in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology but I'll work in any specialty.

also what specialty probably get paid the most?

Re: What are specialties?

Shenicka, You need to use caution whenever someone tells you a certain "specialty" doesn't pay as well as another "specialty." Pay for MAs is not usually paid dependent on the "specialty" for which they work. Rather they are paid dependent on things like
1. their level of skill, (the most important)
2. whether or not the MA is certified,
3. type of education
4. # years of experience

It may be that this particular MA had worked for a pediatrician who did not pay as well as some doctor of another specialty for which she worked.

Re: What are specialties?

OK...thanks

i think i will go into pediatrics because i think i would enjoy working with kids and i understand the child is fussy about the injection and venipunctures for that fact that my daughter does the same thing lol or either go into ob/gyn because while i was pregnant i read up on alot of things so i already knew most of the things we learned in school about obstetrics, gynecology and pediatrics.
