Scariest work encounter last night- had to share!

I work at an urgent care clinic. I am the only nurse there, plus the doc and a receptionist. A father came carrying in a toddler last night screaming " he's not breathing!"
PANIC!
I got him back to a room and laid him on the table, put my head down to his face and luckily he grunted. The child was completely unresponsive. I told dad he was breathing( that helped calm dad a bit). Doc came in and did a jaw lift to keep his airway open while I got oxygen but asked for intubation stuff. I have never even seen a real intubation! We are at a clinic not an ER! Thank god we didn't need it. EMS was called and the child came to before they got there. We think it was a febrile seizure but that was the scariest experience I have had yet in 15 years.
The doctor praised me as to how I reacted in calming the dad and being so efficient. He lost his bowels too, so I cleaned him up and got all of his clothes off, which was also comforting for the parents to not see their child covered in feces. It's amazing how the whole "ABC's comes to you in a crisis situation.
Anyway just had to share!

Tracy, I am so glad you DID share. I wish I'd see these type of posts more often, simply for the fact, that there always is a a lesson (usually an obvious one, but often also a hidden one) in them.

Another example of staying calm, working efficiently, hand in hand with the doctor, and remembering that the little things ALSO count big!!! I know the boy's parents appreciated the care. Can you even imagine how they must have felt???? Kudos! And thanks for sharing. I enjoyed reading and learning from it.

yes, the dad actually sought me out and thanked me before heading to the hospital. In a matter of 15 minutes we had him somewhat stabilized, calmed the parents, explained what is probably happening, and had him ready for transport. It's amazing how well everything comes together when it needs to.
Thanks for the comments, I love to share experiences :)
