McDowell school superintendent offered new job in Beckley

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BECKLEY — The Raleigh County School Board voted unanimously Wednesday morning to offer James “Jim” Brown, currently McDowell County Superintendent, a position as Superintendent of Raleigh County Schools.

Board President Richard Snuffer said he hopes negotiations will be complete next week and to have Brown sign a contract by June 1 to begin work on July 1.

June 30 is current Superintendent Dr. Charlotte Hutchens’ last day.

“All the candidates brought valuable assets to the table. We liked that Brown has experience being a superintendent and has been creating innovative programs in McDowell,” Snuffer said. “He has an enthusiasm for students and a desire to have a successful county school system.”

Brown said he was extremely excited about the chance to come to Raleigh County, one the top school systems in the state.

“Early on, I am going to spend a lot of time getting acclimated to the county, the schools, the teachers and the administration. Dr. Hutchens has done an outstanding job for many years and I plan on taking it slow and get the lay of the land,” he said.
