My name is Fred Parsons and I would have been a member of th
class of 1954. My family moved away in the fall of 1949 and
I graduated high school in Windham, Ohio. I attended Welch
Grade and Jr High School from the 1st grade (fall of 1942)
threough the fall period of the 8th grade, (fall of 1949).
I lived with my family behind Blakely Field on Browns Creek.
Matney's junk yard was directly below my house.Going through
the year book from 1950 brings to mind the following names:
Shelby Blankenship (lived near playground on Browns
Cereek
Elezabeth Cable (lived near Matney's store)
Evadell Dawson (lived on lower part of Grandview St)
John Hurt
Jackie Poe
Ramona Sampedro
John Vickers
Robert Whittaker
Don Copley (in seventh grade but my best buddie and
lived near me on Grandview Street
Melvin Foster
I'm sure that there are many more that have slipped my mind
over the past sixty plus years. I know that going through
the year book that I recognize many names but cannot recall
just who they were. I am certain that many have passed
on. I am also certain that many like my family left Souther
W. Va. for brighter futures and opportunites.
As for me, upon graduation I entered military service and
remained until retirement in 1974. I have two children,
one living in Mobil, Alabama and the other in Omaha,
Nebraska. I have been through Welch twice in the past 60+
years. Everything seems so much smaller now.
